The Girl and Very Important Cat Business (book excerpt)
There once lived a cheerful and curious girl named Grace. She was always making up new games and loved going for walks and exploring new places. She had a cat named Peach. He was ginger, fluffy, and very dignified. Grace loved it when Peach joined in her games or just lay nearby, squinting in the sun.
But sometimes, the cat would suddenly get up and leave. Without warning. He would walk past the fence, across the yard, and then disappear. Grace would call for him, get angry, and feel hurt — after all, that’s not what friends do.
One day, she complained to her mother:
"Why does he keep leaving? He’s my friend!"
"He has his own cat business to attend to," her mother replied.
"Cat business?" Grace thought. "What kind of business could Peach possibly have?"
The next day, when the cat stood up, stretched, and headed for the door, Grace got up and followed him. Quietly and unnoticed, just like a real detective.
