The Boy and the Winning Goal (book excerpt)
"Go, Samuel, go!" they shouted from the stands, but he had almost no strength left to fight; his legs felt like lead, and sweat stung his eyes. In the final minute of the deciding match for the city tournament finals, a pass came to Samuel for a one-touch shot, and he missed. He didn't just miss the target—he sent the ball rolling out of bounds to the collective groan of the fans. The whistle blew. Game over. Defeat.
Samuel, wearing the number 9 jersey, stood with his head bowed, on the verge of tears from the sheer frustration with himself. He could feel the team’s eyes on him—not angry, but exhausted and disappointed. The team’s goalkeeper patted him on the shoulder:
"It’s okay, it happens. You’ll get it next time."
But those words offered no comfort. The "next time" wouldn't come for another year. At ten or twelve years old, every failure feels like the end of the world.
